Chief of Police: William Joyce

William Joyce William was appointed the Village’s Police Chief in December 2007. Chief Joyce served for more than two years as Public Safety Director. As the Public Safety Director, Joyce prepared the Village’s Emergency Response Plan, coordinated the red light camera enforcement project, organized the Village Neighborhood Watch program, and increased the number of certified Police Department officers. He also completed the Northwestern University Executive Management Program. Chief Joyce currently serves on the Executive Board of The South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police, Chairman for the Police Athletic League of Illinois and the Advisory Board of the Illinois State Crime Commission. He also completed the F.B.I. Midwest Executive Development Training. Chief Joyce was a part-time South Chicago Heights police officer from 1994 to 2005.

"Chief Joyce brings an extensive knowledge of law enforcement and a wealth of experience to the job,” said Mayor David L. Owen. Joyce began his police career as a cadet with the Chicago Police Department. He joined the Chicago force in 1973 after his graduation at the top of his Chicago Police Academy class. His experience with the Chicago department included assignments with tactical, criminal investigation and special investigations units and the detective division, as well as mayoral security detail. As a Chicago officer, Joyce earned numerous awards for outstanding police work. He successfully completed Hostage Barricade and Terrorists Negotiation training, which was provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Northwestern Traffic Institute course.

Deputy Chief: Timothy Wehrle

Timothy WehrleTimothy was hired by the South Chicago Heights Police Department in June of 1992 and attended the Police Academy at the University of Illinois Police Training Institute. During his seventeen year career with the department, Timothy served as a Juvenile Officer, Canine Officer, Field Training Officer, Communications Supervisor and Leads Agency Coordinator. In July 2007 Timothy was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and attended front line supervisory training. Timothy was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police on May 1, 2008. He graduated from the F.B.I. Midwest Executive Development Training class and Strategic Leadership class. In April 2009, Timothy will graduate from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Executive Institute. Timothy is a current member of the South Suburban Police Chief’s Association, Illinois Juvenile Officer Association, and the Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. Timothy is currently working on his Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice Management.
